The Triton hosts networking with Viking SurfSUP on March 5 in Ft. Lauderdale. All yacht crew and industry professionals are invited to bring business cards to the meet and greet on the first Wednesday of the month from 6-8 p.m.

Until then, learn more from Manager Darlan Lopes.

Q. Viking SurfSUP is a great play on words, tell about the business and name.

We are a surf and stand up paddle board (SUP) retail store in Ft. Lauderdale in the 17th Street district. We cater to the surf, skate, kite, skim board and SUP sportsperson. We actually produce and manufacture our products and can custom make your boards.

The history of the name came from our Fusion Viking and Danish Blood brands which reflected the owner, Christian Wolthers‘ Danish background. We originally made Viking boards and needed to add to our brand to reflect the growth in the SUP sport while talking to surfers and paddlers.

Q. What are your best selling products?

Our custom Viking SUP model is made in America and is outstanding in quality and performance for both surfing and cruising models. Our most popular sizes are the nine-foot and 10-foot 6-inch. Trends in length change; previously people looked for bigger, more stable boards. Now they look for boards they can lift or carry. But they get bigger boards if they keep them by water and don’t have to transport. We help you get the right weight and volume. That choice can be very personal.

In the case of yachts, they may have three sizes onboard for guests to surf or cruise. Say they are in the Caribbean where the guests can paddle in and around the islands, a bigger board can go faster. The weight and size depend on the purpose. We can help crew tailor what the boat carries according to trips, guests and destinations.

SUPs are so versatile. We even have a drink holder, just lay back, enjoy the water and have a cold beverage. LaWedge is a cooler and pillow that can attach to the board. It floats and can store keys, phone, camera, Ipod and small things. We have dry bags to carry your gear for a longer trip. Some people use SUPs to fish, so we have a pole holder. There is an actual fishing model of board also which is very wide for more stability when catching big fish.

Q. There is a lot of competition these days, how do you stand out?

As a worldwide experienced company, we do not only wait for the customer to come in, we reach out to them in many parts in the world through our networking. We travel a lot to assure we provide the best products to our clients and we offer our outstanding customer service.

We have surf teams in places like Brazil, Hawaii, Denmark and Central America. That’s how we continue to improve on performance, quality and durability. We are always testing our products in different waters, waves and atmospheres.

We sell a lot of skateboards to crew. We have GoPro and JVC cameras and underwater camera housings for iPhone and Galaxy. And a mix of things like glasses, bathing suits, ding repair kits, sunscreen, lip balms and, of course, accessories like fins, bags, leashes, wax, deck beds (traction pads) and paddles.

Q. Maybe a yacht has not considered having SUPs onboard, how can they get started?

First thing is find a company to assist them in choosing the best, most durable products with continuous customer support; we are an excellent choice. We sell or rent high quality skim, surf and SUP boards and we deliver right to the yacht. We do free demonstrations and we can teach lessons. We’ll take you to the beach and let you try some boards, plus we can teach you how to teach guests.

Come on, you take your yacht to the most beautiful places. People want to get out on the water, see the scenes, the creatures, the sunrise, sunset; SUPs are a great way to do that. This is the largest growing sport in the world and most everyone can do it.

Q. Tell us about personalizing products (putting yacht name or logo on boards).

Say a yacht wants to add the yacht logo onto their own boards, we can do colors, sizes, just about anything. We can put the yacht logo right on it and even match the yacht’s colors. You can just e-mail the graphics or logo in high resolution or if you have it in laminate paper, we place it right inside as we make it. We can put the logo anywhere.

You can create a personalized board for the owner or give them to charter guests. Definitely one of a kind products for each yacht. We can also make the logos.

Q. You can speak from experience.

The staff are all surfers, competitors and board shapers. This is a very experienced crew in charge of Viking SurfSUP and Viking Surfboards. Bring your questions and stay for a cup of our excellent coffee.
