In early August, Italy banned large cruise ships from Venice’s St. Mark’s lagoon, according to news reports.
Last November, Italy began limiting traffic on the lagoon and the Giudecca canal, which flows into the lagoon.
No ships weighing more than 96,000 tons will be able to enter the lagoon. The nearby Contorta-Sant’Angelo canal is a possible alternative route for larger vessels to reach Venice. Government agencies are conducting environmental studies to determine the efficacy of that.
