Yacht captain cautions buyers at the pump in Grenadines – Tobago Cays

I am currently down in the Grenadines/Tobago Cays on charter and working with our agent, Heather, from Erika’s Marine Services, and had a situation happen that I would like to get out to all other yachts transiting this area.

A couple of my crew went to refuel some portable jugs at Union Island and found the main fueling dock inoperable, so they went next door to an unmarked fueling station owned by a local person by the name of Dolphin. He also owns the boat “Mr. Best Price”. My crew assumed the price would be the same as the published price next door, which was far from what we got at $8 per gallon.

When we tried to decline the fuel, the proprietor refused and became aggressive. He had about five of his mates come over to intimidate our crew. Heather did a great job trying to get this person to be reasonable. I had to call the local police, and Heather is reaching out to the local tourism board about his aggressive nature. Apparently, he is this way with all of the boaters around the area.

I write this to tell all of our peers in the industry to avoid this person, his business and his boat at all costs.

On the bright side, Erika’s Marine Services has been fantastic, and even the dive guide they arranged was one of the nicest and knowable people for diving in the Tobago Cay area. I have used Erika’s many times over the years and I highly recommend them to all visiting yachts.
