The Duffield 58 trawler by award-winning Marshall “Duffy” Duffield debuted in late April at the Newport (Calif.) Boat Show. Technologically advanced in hull design, construction materials and equipment, the Duffield 58’s interior layout and design maintains a strong link to West Coast-style trawlers and power cruisers.
“I wanted the 58 to be traditional-looking and perform well using much less fuel,” Duffield said.
Working with East Coast designer Doug Zurn, Duffield created one of the more silent offerings in this size range. Using the Seatorque Control Boss Enclosed Shaft System and positioning the soft-mounted engine aft of the main salon and sleeping areas keeps the noise and vibration to a minimum. This arrangement also allows for easier access to the engine without having to dismantle the main salon floor.
The Seakeeper gyro stabilizing system keeps rolling to a minimum while running at slow speeds and at rest, and the Humphrey Interceptors Active ride control manages stability at planing speeds. A single-engine design allows for lower cost, greater accessibility, less noise and vibration and increased efficiency, Duffield said.
“In early sea trials, we are burning 1.4 gpm at 17 knots and 1.75 gpm at just about 20 knots,” he said. “We figure that’s about 47 percent less than others in this class.”
