About 90 people celebrated National Marina Day at Hall of Fame Marina in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday. Organized by Marina Manager Scott Salomon, the afternoon introduced kids — especially local Cub Scout Pack 608 — to the marine industry through an early morning cruise on S/V Spirit of Lauderdale, marking the first time out on the water for many of them.

Local firefighters and U.S. Coast Guard first responders answered questions from scouts and guests while offering tours of their vessels.

Melanie Bergero from Oneness performed an in-water cleaning demonstration of the company’s remote control boat that collects oil, waste and debris from waterways. Second Stew Bugsy Drake from the Bravo show “Below Deck Mediterranean” was there to greet guests and sign autographs.

Every year, the event also raises money for a local worthy cause. This year, proceeds from a raffle helped yacht captain and broker Dave Wukawitz pay his medical bills after an unexpected illness recently that required amputation of one of his feet.
