Motoryachts Renaissance, BW and Blue Moon named best in Newport competitions

Chef Ian Gabbe of the 116-foot M/Y Renaissance won top honors in the Best Charter Yacht Chef competition during the Newport Charter Yacht Show. Gabbe cooked his way to the top with his preparation of steak with parsnip puree and chocolate mint sauce. Eight chefs vied for the title. Chef Jean-Marc Masson of the 120-foot M/Y BW was runner up, and Chef Daniele Messina of the 112-foot M/Y Frisky Lady took third place.

Other yachts registered to compete included Adriane Collins of S/Y Jupiter, Carolina ‘Karo’ Velandia of M/Y Blue Moon, Matthew Shea of M/Y Tail Lights, Michael Creighton of M/Y Aphrodite and Jenny Baxter of S/Y Contingency.

Other competitions for the 25 yachts at the Newport show, held June 19-23 at the Newport Shipyard, included tablescaping, signature cocktail and designer water events. Yachts on display ranged in size from the 60-foot (18.3m) S/Y Beau Geste to the 198-foot (60.4m) M/Y Blue Moon.

Chief Stew Bex Kerol and Sarah Lind, of M/Y BW, won best overall in the tablescaping competition with an arrangement of peonies, ivy vine and succulents. M/Y Tail Lights was the fan favorite with a Peter Pan theme created by crew Sandra Murphy, Lisa Murphy and Jeff Marshall.

M/Y Blue Moon won the designer water competition with a strawberry, kiwi and lemon infusion created by crew, Ashley Pursel, Laura Finnerty, Jordan Sowman, Bethany Garrett and Michelle Cobb. M/Y BW’s crew won second place with a cucumber mint water from crew Sarah Lind and Rebecca Kearl. And third place went to Ross MacDonald, of M/Y Slainte III, with water infused with ginger, raspberry and blueberries.

Grace Dvornik and the crew of S/Y Serenity won the specialty cocktail competition with a vodka infused cocktail of lime and jalapeños. Second place went to M/Y Blue Moon’s crew Ashley Pursel, Laura Finnerty, Jordan Sowman, Bethany Garrett and Michelle Cobb and third place went to M/Y Divine Destiny with a cocktail created by Kerry Juhr and Denise Dobbs. Capt. Garren Hammond, of M/Y Frisky Lady, won the captain’s drone challenge.

About 12 yachts participated in yacht hop. The crew of M/Y Renaissance dressed as the crew of the shipwrecked S.S. Minnow from the show Gilligan’s Island.

“It was great, we kind of took over the show,” Herman Pundt said. “And a storm came up right when they sang the theme song.”

About 75 people attended an educational seminar by The American Yacht Charter Association and a party and awards dinner closed the show.
