FLIR Systems has added a new camera to its M-series platform – the FLIR M500 multi-sensor maritime camera. The cooled mid-wave, 640 x 512 thermal camera’s ability to detect small temperature variations translates into greater detail and enhanced image clarity, allowing captains to discern targets more than 9 miles (15k) away, navigate tight waterways and avoid hazards while underway, according to a company news release.

“The FLIR M500 multi-sensor camera is FLIR’s most technologically advanced M-Series camera to date,” stated Grégoire Outters, vice president and general manager of FLIR Maritime, a thermal imaging company based in Oregon.

The M500’s 14X optical zoom lens and an integrated high-definition visible camera also provide early detection of vessels, key landmarks and navigation aids in both daytime and low light conditions. Equipped with active gyro-stabilization for steady imagery in rough seas, the FLIR M500 also includes video tracking to monitor a selected moving or stationary target.
