Update Sept.30

An inquest in a local court in Birmingham, England last week, ruled the death of Jacob Nicol as accidental. Mr. Nicol was 3rd assistant engineer on M/Y Kibo when he fell into the water while working over the side of the 265-foot Abeking & Rasmussen on May 3, 2015, in Palma, Spain.

It was reported that Mr. Nicol suffered a fractured skull after being hit on the head by the fender hook and he was under the water for several minutes before he was recovered. After the incident he was in a coma and then underwent rehabilitative treatments before he died on June 7.

A Birmingham coroner’s court ruled on Sept. 30 that the cause of death was bronchial pneumonia brought on by his immobility.

“There were no visible external injuries to the head, though the brain appeared to be small,”

said Emma Brown, the assistant coroner at the inquest. “The cause of death was a chest infection attributed to his immobility caused by the accident which had led to an hypoxic brain injury.”
