Longtime Fort Lauderdale boat restorer Michael Grimes died May 24 after a respiratory illness. He was 77.

Mr. Grimes was an independent contractor that worked on smaller boats at Marina Mile Yachting Center on the New River in Fort Lauderdale, according to friend and colleague David Hole.

“I talked to him last week, he thought he was coming back to work sanding boat bottoms. We thought he would beat this,” Hole said.

He was well-liked and will be missed at Rendezvous Bar and Grill where he often met up with friends near the marina, Hole said.

A memorial service is scheduled for May 29 from 3-5 p.m. at Fred Hunter Funeral Home, 718 S. Federal Highway
Fort Lauderdale (33316).
