The Florida Department of Transportation issued a feasibility study for a pedestrian/bicyclist bridge over the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The team evaluated alternatives at four locations over the river as well as several “no-build” alternatives including a water shuttle to cross the river or trolley service to transport pedestrians and cyclists on U.S. 1 through the existing Henry E. Kinney Tunnel under the river.

The 57-year-old tunnel’s “poor vehicular visibility and narrow sidewalks make the pedestrian experience crossing Federal Highway less than desirable and make the tunnel prone to pedestrian and bicyclist accidents,” according to the FDOT study.

Members of the marine industry have expressed concern over another bridge impeding marine traffic, not to mention the high cost of building it that could be better spent elsewhere.
