Engineer OK after being found unconscious

By Dorie Cox

A yacht engineer was treated for heat exhaustion off the coast of Fort Lauderdale on Monday (July 9) after fellow crew found him unconscious in the engine room of the 170-foot, blue-hull vessel they were working on.

Crew from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue took the 42-year-old man off the yacht, which was located approximately six miles from Port Everglades, about two miles from shore off Fort Lauderdale. The engineer was transported by fireboat to the 15th Street boat ramp and then transported by ground rescue to Broward Health.

“He’s OK,” said Stephen Gollan, fire rescue battalion chief. “The crew hadn’t seen him for a while and found him passed out in the engine room between the motors. Our fire boat responded, and they got him up and off of the boat. By the time they reached port, he was talking. It was a good thing they called.”

Gollan did not know the name of the yacht or where it had traveled from.
