Plywood Regatta give students chance to sink or swim

Boat-building and racing event benefits students pursuing advance marine education.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – More than 300 local students will pick up power tools and find out if they, and their homemade boats, will sink or swim during the 20th annual Plywood Regatta on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10.

The two-day boat building and racing event, organized by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, takes place at the Dania Beach City Marina near the Dania Beach Pier. The event introduces local youth and the community to both the excitement and career opportunities associated with recreational boating.

Thirty-five teams of South Florida middle school, high school and college students will attempt to build sea-worthy vessels on April 9 using simple hand-tools and only the supplied materials of plywood, 3M 5200 fast-cure caulk and zip ties. Once the boats are complete, students paint and decorate them. On April 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the public is invited to watch as the students compete in a fun-filled and friendly rivalry when the finished boats line up and race in a series of heats to determine which boats actually are seaworthy and which boats exude that sinking feeling!

All Plywood Regatta proceeds benefit South Florida’s marine industry education programs and the Plywood Regatta Scholarship Fund. The aim of these programs is to encourage students to pursue careers in the marine trades, maintaining South Florida’s talent cluster as the global leader for service in the recreational and yachting segments of the marine industry.

Supporters of the event include the city of Dania Beach, Lauderdale Marine Center, Fort Lauderdale Mariners Club, Westport, Advanced Mechanical Enterprises, Derecktor of Florida, Maritime Professional Training, High Seas Yacht Service, Marine Max, Interlux and many more.

The Marine Industries Association of South Florida, created in 1961, is a nonprofit trade organization dedicated to promoting, protecting and growing the 110,000 middle-class jobs in Broward County and 136,000 jobs regionally in marine businesses while promoting the goods and services that sustain them and create an economic impact of $8.8 billion in Broward County and $11.5 billion regionally. The association has more than 500 members and owns the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
