UK club admits women

The Royal Yacht Squadron on the Isle of Wight, one of the world’s most prestigious yacht clubs, has voted to allow women to become full members for the first time in its nearly 200-year history, according to news reports.

At its meeting at the beginning of Cowes Week on Sunday, attending members voted unanimously for the move. Housed in Cowes Castle, the club admiral is Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and its patron is the Queen.

The decision still has to be ratified by the full membership in the spring.
