Fire destroys two yachts in Ft. Lauderdale

An early morning fire destroyed two yachts at New River Marina today in Ft. Lauderdale. It does not appear that anyone was hurt.

According to people in shipyards, the yachts likely were a 70-foot Maora, which was parked alongside the dock, and a new-model, even larger yacht similar to a Riva rafted beside it. Judging by the condition of the vessels as the fire was extinguished, the fire appears to have started in the newer model yacht.

Workers in the Bradford Marine shipyard were alerted to the fire after hearing pops and cracks. Others who live nearby were alerted by the sirens of more than a half dozen fire rescue vehicles rushing to the marina.

Thick black smoke from the burning fiberglass yachts was visible for miles. By 10:30 a.m., the fires were extinguished, but firefighters continued to douse the smoldering yachts with foam.

Police and fire officials have not yet released details of the incident. Both yachts appear to be completely destroyed, although they were both still afloat this morning.
