Waxy closed for renovations

Now that the FIFA World Cup matches are over, Waxy O’Connor’s Irish Pub on Southeast 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale has temporarily closed for a major renovation.

Long a gathering place for yacht crew, the restaurant and bar is expanding into the building it owns to the north, creating a new kitchen and bathrooms, and allowing for a larger seating area and bar.

Waxy’s is expected to reopen in time for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which begins Oct. 31.

We’re gathering Waxy stories from its 20 years in business. Share your stories with us at

I would much rather read an article on the future dealing with Bahia Cabana, a yacht crew hangout for the past 30 years.
