Bradford Marine Bahamas’ yard superintendent Thurber Withey dies

Bradford Marine Bahamas’ yard superintendent Thurber Withey died on Sept. 6. He held the position since March 2009. Previously he held several positions including project manager, electrical superintendent, and foreman at Rybovich Shipyard.

Bradford Marine shared the following press release:

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Thurber Withey on Thursday, September the 6th 2018. Thurber had been serving as the Yard Superintendent at Bradford Marine Bahamas since March 2009, and he was recognized as one of the most knowledgeable and dedicated shipyard superintendents in the industry.

Prior to his ten years of service for Bradford Marine, Thurber was a Project Manager at Rybovich Shipyard where he also served as the Electrical Superintendent and Foreman. His electrical knowledge and experience were extensive, and he was instrumental in developing the Marine Electrical Technician Training Certification Program for the American Boat and Yacht Council.

Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Thurber’s education process started when his family moved to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the late 1960’s and he began managing businesses and operating transport vessels in the upper Caribbean.

He soon moved on to the marine repair industry where he became a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and also spearheaded the integration of Project Management techniques with Service Estimating including the use of graphics and timelines for use as a management tool. Thurber’s energy for furthering his own knowledge never stopped, and it was infectious to those around him. He always had time to pass along his own knowledge to his co-workers and associates. Thurber was not only a respected professional, but he was known and loved by everyone around him who remember his sense of kindness, friendliness, and passion for the yachting industry.

He is survived by his two daughters, Cassandra and Jessica, his granddaughters Caden and Channing, and his brothers, Doc, Steve, and Mack. A celebration of life will be held in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos this fall. His daughters remind us all, when in doubt, ask yourself, “what would Thurber do?”

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to ABYC Foundation at abycinc.org/page/Foundation.
