Capt. Laura Tritch dies

Sep 22, 2018 by Lucy Chabot Reed

Capt. Laura Tritch died April 27 of a rare disease, according to her sister. She had been in a memory care home for about three years at the time of her death.

Capt. Tritch was skipper of the 144-foot (44m) Trinity M/Y Marlena from April 2008 to September 2010 when the yacht cruised the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, Egypt and Tunisia.

Capt. Tritch also shared her yachting knowledge and experiences in several articles for The Triton during that time. In December, she gave crew resume tips on how to quickly attract a captain’s attention.

In February 2010, she wrote about how valuable a Seaman’s Book is to yacht crew.

A resume from about 2013 listed her credentials as a USCG 1600-ton Master of Motor or Steam upon Oceans/3000-ton ITC, and a 100-ton Master of Sail upon Oceans. She also has her GMDSS-ARPA endorsement. She had back surgery in late 2012 and had taken some time away from yachts to heal.

Her objective on that resume was written thus: “I thrive on the challenge of performing at a level of perfection while leading my crew by my example. Qualities that describe me are: dependable, punctual, trustworthy, self-starter, level-headed and perceptive. I have a thorough knowledge of ship’s systems and my 35 years of experience will provide an owner with the highest level of professional service and safety.”
