Yacht club investigates self-inflating life vests after man drowns

Oct 5, 2018 by Triton Staff

The Chicago Yacht Club has launched an investigation into auto-inflating personal flotation devices after a man drowned during the club’s annual Race to Mackinac on Lake Michigan in July, the Chicago Sun-Times has reported.

Jon Santarelli, 53, was competing in the race on S/Y Imedi when he slipped under the lifelines and went overboard. The life vest he was wearing was designed to automatically inflate underwater, but failed to do so, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials. His body was found a week later.

The yacht club has formed a committee to examine the reliability, maintenance and effectiveness of auto-inflation technology, and expects to release its findings in January.
