Update Nov. 14, 10 p.m.

Derecktor Holdings Inc. was chosen tonight to build and manage a Fort Pierce large yacht facility by a unanimous vote of St. Lucie County commissioners, according to James Brewer, business development with Derecktor of Florida.

The competing bid was submitted by Fort Pierce Yacht and Ship, headed by Buddy Hack, to develop the facility in the port about 40 miles north of West Palm Beach and about 100 miles north of Fort Lauderdale.

“Derecktor is pleased and excited to have been selected by the St. Lucie Board of County Commissioners to create and operate the new megayacht facility in the Port of Fort Pierce,” Brewer wrote in a text to The Triton. “We look forward to reaching a mutually beneficial lease agreement and to developing a shipyard unequaled in the United States. We’d like to thank everyone who participated in this effort.”

Representatives from two businesses vying to build and manage a Fort Pierce large yacht facility face decision-makers for a final interview on Oct. 30.

Derecktor Holdings Inc. and Fort Pierce Yacht and Ship have submitted separate bids for the facility to be located in the 290-acre port about 40 miles north of West Palm Beach and about 100 miles north of Fort Lauderdale.

St. Lucie County commissioners unanimously held their votes on Oct. 2 in what was scheduled to be a final decision between the two bids.

Buddy Hack, head of Fort Pierce Yacht and Ship, previously worked with yachts in the port and built relationships with the community.

“We have strong local involvement and investment,” Hack said before the Oct. 2 meeting.

“This is a great opportunity; we could build something here,” said president and chairman of the board at Derecktor, Paul Derecktor, before the Oct. 2 meeting. “We have more experience than anyone in the country, sailing yachts and motor yachts, we have worked on them all, all over the world. It’s what we do and have done for 70 years. We are uniquely qualified.”

All five commissioners present requested more time to ask, and get answers to, questions about how Derecktor Holdings Inc. and Fort Pierce Yacht and Ship, LLC facilities would be run and how they would affect the community.
