Camper & Nicholsons’ Cesme Marina in Turkey has joined “The Squid Project,” a civic initiative to address the dwindling squid population due to pollution and over-harvesting in the waters around Izmir and Cesme.
The project reportedly aims to generate 1.5 million squid initially, and continue adding to that growth for at least another year.
To that end, Cesme Marina staff prepared two squid nests and had them positioned by a diver in the marina, according to a company press release. The nests will be checked in three months for squid eggs.
Cesme Marina also supports other local environmental projects, according to Camper & Nicholsons. One is the Olive Oil Project, which helps sustain olive trees around the marina while providing organic olive oil to guests. Another, The Mussel Project, involves cultivating mussel beds within the marina, then monitoring water cleanliness. Mussels naturally cleanse the water, creating an eco-friendly environment for other marine life.
“With the support from our customers and staff at the marina, plus the exceptional efforts in creating eco-friendly initiatives at Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, we are delighted to support the projects,” stated Can Akaltan, general manager of the marina.
