The American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) has announced its first “Marine Service Technology: Educator Training Conference,” which will take place July 23-25 in Annapolis, Maryland. There are people from 15 states and three countries registered so far, according to the council.

“We have high school and post-secondary technical instructors who have been teaching marine tech for years, and some who are just starting to think about it,” stated John Adey, president of ABYC.

Conference topics will include the evolution of tech ed and the modern student, shop stocking, layout and safety, creating and managing a curriculum advisory committee, the ABYC high school and tech school textbook and curriculum, the Evinrude outboard program, and hands-on training aids.

Sponsors of the conference, which the council hopes will become an annual event, include Evinrude, PowerProducts, Imtra, NMEA, Safe Harbor Marinas and West Marine PRO.

“In order to have great boating, you have to have great boats, well built and well repaired,” stated Margaret Podlich of ABYC Foundation. “These are the people who are going to get the next generation focused, trained, and running into our industry.”
