Longtime Merle Wood employee dies

By Dorie Cox

Long-time Merle Wood & Associates employee Barry Hall died on Thursday of cancer at the hospital at Miami Veterans Administration. He was 71.

Mr. Hall was a “member of the team,” said Kim Sawyer, assistant to the chief financial officer and also director of U.S. boat shows for Merle Wood & Associates. Sawyer met Mr. Hall during a boat show more than 20 years ago.

“I was on a ladder, doing things for myself and he said, ‘Young lady, you need some help?’ So we gave him a job,” Sawyer said.

Barry Hall Nov. 19, 1947 – Aug. 15, 2019

Mr. Hall had worked on boats as mate and captain and said he wanted a land-based job. He worked with the company for more than 20 years on the boat show set-up team and maintained the company facilities, including 12 storage units for boat show supplies.

Originally from the Chicago area, he served in the U.S. Air Force.

“He was sweet and amazing, like Santa without the beard,” Sawyer said. “He was a true gentleman, always had a smile and told funny, old time stories.”

A celebration of life for Mr. Hall is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Bahia Mar Yachting Center Captains Quarters at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale (33316) from noon to 3 p.m. Contact for more information.
