Last year about this time, the Hilton Marina in Fort Lauderdale was bought by Brookfield Asset Management and renamed 17th Street Yacht Basin. Located on one of the central yachting business streets in Fort Lauderdale, yacht captains and crew can walk from the marina to many nearby services.

With water access directly off of the Intracoastal Waterway, large yachts have from 10 to 17 feet of water at the L-shaped face dock, which has more than 630 feet, plus 200 on the north dock. Also tucked just behind the buildings and around a corner are 33 slips for yachts up to 70 feet in length. The marina is just north of the SE 17th Street Causeway, which makes for easy access to Port Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean.

Purchased from the Blackstone Group, the marina is managed by US Marina Group and headed by two industry veterans, Kevin Quirk and Jim Bronstien.

The major upgrade at 17th Street Yacht Basin involves the electrical systems. Power pedestals have been renovated on the face dock to include the addition of 200 and 400 amp 480v power to the north side for larger boats, as well as 50 or 100 amp that is available at each slip for the smaller boats.

Capt. Alan Montgomery

Capt. Alan Montgomery has been the dockmaster for more than a year. A licensed captain since 1986, his experience includes some engineering and work as a mate on board. Assistant Dockmaster Aubree Dunbar is also on the job, often found in the dockmaster office next to the face dock.

During the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this year, Ocean Independence will be on display at the marina, according to Montgomery.

Guests of the marina have access to the Hilton Hotel waterfront cocktail bar, a restaurant, the pool, the fitness center  and parking.

Hotel rooms will be renovated in time for American football’s Superbowl on Feb. 2, according to Quirk. And subsequent renovation will make way for a new rooftop restaurant.
