Q. Tell us about Baglietto.
We are an Italian shipyard with 160 years of experience that builds custom yachts in the 40-70m range in aluminum and steel. In addition to custom, we build displacement, semi-displacement and planing hulls. We deliver just two to three boats a year out of our shipyard in La Spezia.
Q. We don’t get many yacht builders that want to target yacht captains and crew. Why did you decide to advertise with us?
Captains, yacht managers and surveyors these days are just as important in the purchase of a yacht as the broker. In this size range, they all have the ear of the owner.
These owners have moved up with their team. They’ve had two to three production boats, and they now realize that they can only get everything they want if they build new or custom. They’re experienced yachtsmen, and they know what they want. And their captains, yacht managers and surveyors are all part of the process to make this a reality.
Q. What is your message to yacht captains?
In addition to the brand having significant heritage, starting in 1854, we are known for our customization and overall quality. Captains, yacht manager, surveyors and owners will be dealing with a boutique shipyard, so we provide an intimate experience.
We don’t have 40 boats floating around from West Palm Beach to Miami. We have two. So you can get to us. If an owner’s team gets involved in a new build with us, they are going to have a support network. And we can tailor that support to the boat and the program as well. A huge part of the success of a new build project is knowing the crew will have a support network once the boat is built.
Q. What would captains be surprised to learn about Baglietto?
Our customization level, and the overall quality. Unlike our competitors, we have more than just a line to choose from. In addition to the line we have, we can do full customization.
For example, we currently have four builds in process. Two of the builds — of 48m and 43m — are being done on existing platforms, and two are completely new. We are building a 54m and a 40m, all in aluminium, that we developed, engineered and tank tested for the owner’s team. Those two are expected to be delivered in 2020, and both will have exteriors designed by Horacio Bozzo and interiors by Hot Lab and Achille Salvagni, respectively.
And we just launched our sixth 55m that made its debut in the recent Monaco Yacht Show.
Q. You just had some other news in Monaco, right?
Yes, we revealed the Francesco Paszkowski Design of our new 65m project and the exclusive interior design concept of the Baglietto 48m (hull number 10233), developed in partnership with Visionnaire. As our CEO said, our mission is to offer our clients a fully custom and unique luxury superyacht. Partnerships with companies that share our philosophy make that a reality.
FPD also designed our 43m due for delivery in 2021.
Q. Tell us about you. What’s your background?
I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, and got into yachting in 2002, pumping out black water tanks for tips at Miami Beach Marina. I was picked off the dock by a captain and trained to be the mate on a 93-foot Westship. We traveled all over the Atlantic coast.
But I was one of those guys called to be on land, so I got my brokerage license in 2004, and eventually went to work for George Jousma at Sanlorenzo. I worked for him almost nine years, doing new builds and brokerage.
In January 2018, I got the opportunity to work directly for a shipyard and joined Baglietto.
