The ROCKWOOL Germany Sail Grand Prix took place over the past weekend in Sassnitz, Germany, and there was plenty of action on the water — including a new speed record.
The Flying Roos won the event, NorthStar Canada finished second, and Los Gallos third, with Black Foils finishing fourth after a penalty. The German event extended the Flying Roos’ championship lead to 14 points in the 2026 Rolex SailGP Championship standings after nine events.
“We definitely had to work for it, but that Final just came out firing,” Flying Roos driver Tom Slingsby said. “There was massive déjà vu heading into it when the wind started shutting down — in race one, we went from first to last, and then in the Final, the wind started shutting down again. But we learned a lot of lessons in that first race about how to get the boat boiling and find the breeze quickly, and we managed to stay boiling all the way around the track.”
Speed on the water was the theme at the event, with several teams reaching impressive speeds and even setting a new SailGP speed record. DS Automobiles SailGP Team France hit 107.63 kph (about 66 mph) in the final race, breaking the SailGP speed record set by ROCKWOOL Racing in the same location last year. ROCKWOOL Racing also hit its highest speed at 106.79 kph, and Los Gallos of Spain clocked 106.55 kph.
Sunday’s racing was challenging, with rain, shifting winds, and low visibility complicating the final day. The reigning champions Emirates GBR finished ninth overall, leaving them tied with the U.S. for fourth in the 2026 championships.
Bonds Flying Roos are in first with 76 points; Los Gallos is in second with 62 points, and Artemis is in third place with 53 points. Four events remain in 2026.
The SailGP Championship returns in September for the inaugural Spain SailGP Valencia from Sept. 5–6, 2026.
