The Professional Yachting Association (PYA) has launched an Onboard Safety Group in February 2025 to address recent safety challenges in the yachting industry. The initiative aims to promote a culture of awareness and foster knowledge-sharing among captains, crew, safety experts, and shoreside professionals. The Group aims to create a dedicated space for captains, crew, onboard safety experts, and shoreside yachting professionals to share their knowledge and experiences to enhance safety standards. The goal is “to ensure crewmembers are equipped with the tools, training, and knowledge necessary to help prevent accidents that could result in casualties and fatalities.” The PYA invites crew to join the discussion and share their experiences, concerns, or questions about onboard safety standards. Crew can contribute to discussions by emailing onboardsafety@pya.org or joining the Telegram group. Crew insight can help highlight key safety issues and incidents on board. Topics may include: Safety equipment and gear Emergency procedures (excluding medical) Fire safety (including lithium-ion risks) Awareness and safety precautions for personal electronic devices Training and drills Comprehensive Safety Plan (SMS) Understanding the standardization of safety procedures on board and how they align with the IMO’s SOLAS Convention “By identifying emerging safety concerns and real-life risks shared within the group, we work alongside a panel of experts to research best practices and provide guidance,” the PYA said. “Our aim is to ensure crewmembers and yachts are better prepared for potential safety threats.” The PYA has already hosted an online webinar for working in enclosed spaces, so stay tuned for future webinars. The PYA notes that all information shared will remain confidential and will not be disclosed without permission.
