Capt. Kelly Gordon launched Yachtie Minds Matter late last year. The non-profit funds mental health therapy and resources in the yachting industry. “I kept hearing that money, being able to afford therapy, was the obstacle,” said Capt. Kelly Gordon. “If that’s the obstacle, I want to eliminate that barrier. So I did! I formed [Yachtie Minds Matter] that would address just that, and now it’s ‘we’ — a small but mighty team doing just that.” Funding applications are now open, and anyone struggling to afford therapy can apply for a grant. The process has been kept simple to make application easy for everyone. The first step is to fill out the form online. Once completed, a Yachtie Minds Matter member will contact the applicant for the next steps and send a confidentiality agreement. At that point, the team will send a list of recommended therapists, all with yachting experience or specialities that can help. If the applicant has a therapist already, Yachtie Minds Matter will work to include them in the program. The final step is a consultation with Yachtie Minds Matter. If additional sessions are recommended, invoices for the ongoing care will be sent directly to Yachtie Minds Matter. “It was bittersweet when the form was launched. Within an hour of opening the form, help was requested. It’s bitter because they need help. But it’s sweet because they’re asking and willing to receive it,” Gordon said. “It’s an amazing feeling to know that your foundation can help.” No medical or personal session information will be sent to Yachtie Minds Matter, and the process is private.
