Candela P-12 Electric Hydrofoiling Ferry

Candela Introduces First Electric Hydrofoiling Ferry in U.S.

Candela and FlyTahoe are introducing the first U.S.-based Candela P-12, the world’s first electric, hydrofoiling ferry, on Lake Tahoe.

The aim is to reduce travel times and introduce a north-south connection across the lake while also cutting emissions. According to Candela, the Candela P-12 is the fastest electric vessel in the world, with the longest range and lower operational costs than diesel-powered vessels. With its 25-knot cruising speeds, the new route is estimated to take less than 30 minutes and will operate year-round as the lake does not freeze in winter.

The Candela P-12 recently entered service in Stockholm, Sweden. Its combination of long ranges, speed, and increased energy efficiency is being called a “game changer” for waterborne transport.

The 30-seat vessel is designed to accommodate skis and bikes and uses hydrofoil technology to fly above the water’s surface at high speeds, unaffected by waves and winds. Candela shares that the wings elevate the hull above the water, reducing drag and slashing energy consumption by 80% compared to traditional vessels.

“It basically works like a jet fighter, which is constantly balanced using ailerons. The principle of the P-12 is the same, except our wings fly in water instead of air,” said Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Swedish Candela.

This innovative design enables the P-12 to operate entirely on renewable electricity rather than fossil fuels, delivering a smooth and efficient ride above the waves, even at high speeds.

“This fusion of flight and electric technologies not only unveils a powerful new business opportunity with nearly 10x operational efficiency but also offers an unmatched customer experience of comfort and safety. Plus, we’ll not just be moving people faster; we’ll be boosting socio-economic mobility by connecting the north and south of the lake,” said Ryan Meinzer, founder and CEO of FlyTahoe.

“We’re proud to partner with FlyTahoe to bring this revolutionary technology to the U.S. for the very first time. This will not only ensure more efficient commuting around Lake Tahoe and unlock business possibilities for waterfront communities, but it’s also a big step toward unlocking the potential of U.S. waterways for zero-emission transport,” Hasselskog said.
