CHIRP Maritime and the Superyacht Alliance (SYA) have created a Superyacht Safe Design Initiative survey to encourage captains and crew to share their operational expertise to inform better superyacht design. Crew feedback can be integral to building a better, safer yacht. As CHIRP shared, “Safety challenges that trace back to original design decisions — layout, access, equipment placement, system design — are common aboard new builds, yet this feedback really reaches builders in a structured way.” The survey aims to address that issue. All responses are collected anonymously by CHIRP Maritime and SYA, analyzed by the SYA Working Group 1, and then provided to the shipyards as “anonymized, actionable intelligence.” The survey asks about functional areas, including the engine room, deck, accommodation, and navigation, as CHIRP reports that issues tend to cluster in these areas. The survey also asks about concerns, whether related to ergonomics, access, fire safety, or seakeeping. The survey also aims to help identify any gaps in existing safety management systems. The survey also asks the crew to share their personal suggestions or raise ideas or concerns related to yacht design to be shared with shipyards.
