A crewmember aboard the ASV-Berlin Club yacht, Walross 4, competing in the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s (RORC) Transatlantic Race from Lanzarote to Antigua, died after being injured on board. According to the RORC media release about the Jan. 19 incident, the crewmember involved was rendered unconscious in an accident on board about 1,500 nautical miles into the race. The RORC Transatlantic Race Director immediately contacted all relevant emergency authorities. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Delgada in the Azores coordinated the response. A nearby commercial freighter was diverted and recovered the injured crewmember. A later report shared that the crewmember had died. "On behalf of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the crewmember," said RORC Commodore Deb Fish. "Our thoughts are also with the yacht’s crew at this profoundly difficult time. We would like to thank all involved in the emergency response for their professionalism.” The crew aboard Walross 4 received professional care en route to their destination.
