If you’re in South Florida and looking for something to do that gets you outside and — bonus — also helps the ocean, consider participating in the annual Broward County Waterway Cleanup. The Broward County Waterway Cleanup event takes place on Saturday, March 7, at more than 30 sites across Broward County, and this 49th edition needs volunteers to help fulfill its mission of collecting and removing trash from Broward’s canals, rivers, and waterways. The Waterway Cleanup was launched in 1976 to help protect marine life and local waterways and has removed tons of debris from the area’s water ever since. In 2025, volunteers removed approximately 20 tons of trash and debris from 38 sites in the county. The event typically runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and participants can register to participate and choose a clean-up site through the online options. Volunteers are also encouraged to use kayaks, paddleboards, boats, or personal watercraft to participate. Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes — and don’t forget the sunscreen. Organizers provide T-shirts, bags, grabbers, and water, but it can’t hurt to bring your own water, as supplies may run out. And if the feel-good isn’t enough, the event is followed by the so-called Trash Bash from 1:30–3:30 p.m., which includes food, drinks, music, and raffles. As part of the event, the Marine Industries Association of South Florida awards several scholarships for its art, short-story, and essay contests for Broward middle- and high-school students, with the winners announced during the bash.
