The UK is implementing new border security measures that may impact travelers. According to Global Marine Travel (GMT), as of January 8, 2025, the country now requires visitors who do not need a visa for short stays to get a travel permit or Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). According to GOV.UK, “This … demonstrates the UK government’s delivery in transforming and digitising the UK border, enabling an increasingly seamless customer experience in the future for the millions of legitimate visitors who come to the UK.” The Electronic Travel Authorization is not a visa but a digital travel permit. Once approved, the £10 permit is valid for two years or until your passport expires. With the ETA, you can still visit the UK for up to six months per visit. You will need the permit if you transit through UK Border Control. GMT shared that numerous crew nationalities will be required to carry the permit unless they already have a UK visa or are UK citizens. In a recent email, GMT advised, “Due to the nominal cost, extended validity, scope of nationals requiring this and the inherent [surprise travel] element of our industry, you should apply for your travel authorization now. Even if you don’t regularly travel to the UK, you should secure the ETA as this is also required for passengers who are simply transiting through the UK [to] an international point beyond.” Apply online and leave time for a decision — approvals should come within three business days.
