More than 1,300 volunteers across 37 cleanup sites removed more than 20 tons of trash and debris from parks, marinas, canals, and neighborhoods along Broward County waterways on Saturday, March 7. Organized by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) and presented by the Florida Inland Navigational District and Informa Markets, the cleanup is Broward County’s largest and longest-running environmental event. Students across South Florida participated, including several youth organizations like Sea Cadets and Scouting America. Some interesting discoveries among the debris included an illegally constructed derelict dock in the Himmarshee Canal in downtown Fort Lauderdale. MIASF also recognized student creativity through the annual Waterway Cleanup Scholarship Contest, awarding more than $2,000 in scholarships to Broward County middle and high school students. With the Waterway Cleanup approaching its milestone 50th anniversary next year, the event continues to remind the marine industry that protecting waterways requires the commitment of every generation.
