IMarEST has appointed a new ambassador to the United Nations Ocean Decade in an effort to advance ocean sustainability solutions. The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMarEST) has appointed Niru Dorrian as ambassador to the United Nations Ocean Decade. Dorrian will serve for three years. According to the press release, Dorrian pledged to “promote the safe and sustainable use of the ocean by channeling the collective expertise of IMarEST members.” IMarEST conceived the ambassador role three years ago to align its activities to the aims of the United Nations Ocean Decade. “Becoming UN Ocean Decade ambassador is a great responsibility and an immense honor,” Dorrian said. “I hope that my work over the next three years will help the IMarEST make a lasting contribution to the future of our oceans.” Dorrian is a marine mammal specialist who has contributed to shaping the future of marine science at IMarEST. He was pivotal in creating the IMarEST Marine Mammal Special Interest Group (MMSIG) in 2020 and has co-chaired it since. In his ambassador role, his priorities include driving research, innovation, and policy alignment through member expertise, engaging marine professionals as ocean stewards, and promoting excellence and skill recognition.
