A pod of orcas sank Idem, a sailing boat, off the coast of Cape Estaca de Bares in Galicia, Spain, on July 23. The vessel was about 1.3 nautical miles off coast, according to La Voz de Galicia. Idem sank before rescue services could tow it back to land, but both sailors on board were unharmed and picked up by a motorboat that was nearby. Although Idem was the only vessel to sink, two other orca encounters were reported that day, according to Salvamento Marítimo, Spain’s public agency responsible for sea search-and-rescue. Sailing boat Chicharro sustained rudder damaged, while another vessel, Kador, reported a collision with orcas. Both vessels were able to make it to shore under their own power.
